You spray your perfume in the morning and by noon it has completely disappeared. Sound familiar? You are not alone. This is one of the most common frustrations people have with fragrance and the answer is not always about the quality of the perfume.
It comes down to two things. Longevity and sillage.
What is Longevity?
Longevity is simply how long a fragrance stays on your skin. A good floral perfume for women should last anywhere between 4 to 8 hours. A rich oriental floral perfume for women with deeper base notes can easily push past 8 hours. On the other hand, the best perfumes for summer are intentionally lighter so 3 to 5 hours is completely normal for a warm weather scent.
What is Sillage?
Sillage is the trail your perfume leaves behind. It is that moment when someone walks past you and turns around. Light floral perfumes tend to have a softer sillage that stays close to the skin. A woody cologne for men or a fresh cologne for men with citrus and musk tends to project more and leave a stronger trail.
Neither is better. It just depends on the occasion and your personal style.
Why Does Your Perfume Fade So Fast?
A few things work against you here. Dry skin absorbs fragrance much faster than moisturized skin. Heat and humidity also break down scent molecules quicker. Rubbing your wrists together after spraying is one of the biggest mistakes people make because it crushes the top notes.
How to Make It Last Longer
Moisturize before you spray. Apply to pulse points like your neck, wrists and chest. Store your perfume away from direct sunlight and heat because both break down the fragrance over time.
The right perfume on well-prepared skin will always surprise you with how long it actually stays.
